Last year I took on my first intern. It's hard work finding an intern, of course they are there to learn from you, but at the same time they also need to be able to contribute some skills that you can utilise while they are around. It took a long time for me to find someone, but when Amanda applied the answer was instantly yes, if anything she was overqualified for the task!
When I left University internships weren't really something that had been embraced in NZ, so it was a strange concept for me that someone would want to come and help me for free. During Amanda's internship she would come to my studio once a week, I tried to share as much as I could, and also load her up with merchandise in the hope that I was compensating her in as many ways as possible.
Amanda was a dream intern, she worked quickly and intelligently and if anything she put many graphic designers I have worked with to shame with her professionalism and talent. While I knew she was too good to be with me for long, it was a very sad day the day her internship ended.
Today I received the above image in the mail from Amanda, a portrait of me in her signature style which was such a lovely surprise! Make sure you check out some of her other portraits on her Tumblr page, and take a look at her new website while you're at it.
