Every time I head to NZFW I come back feeling inspired, great memories for me have included interviewing designers in 2014, seeing paper fall from the sky at a Kate Sylvester show and getting lost in the bush on the way to Stolen Girlfriends offsite show in 2014.
I wanted to know the highlights from a designers perspective.
Q. Looking back to your past FW shows do you have a favourite or a standout, can you share your highlights?
Kirsha Whitcher - Salasai www.Salasai.com - My all time favourite show was in 2011 at the Hilton Hotel - a huge concrete space where we built a mirror 8m long by 6m high, and as the models walked away from it it looked like they also climbed the wall of mirror as well, it was super special. Our team was on point that year and it was the most enjoyable time as I had my entire family come to the show, it was super duper memorable to the point of feeling elated afterward. Also the St Matthews Church show was another fav. We've had so many great successful shows, even this last one we worked with architect William Taylor and we collaborated on creating an amazing structure of lines and spaces for the models to interact with, we loved creating a moving installation, it again, in terms of working with space and limitations was another success for us.
Lucilla Gray - www.lucillagray.com - My first show will always be a special moment for me. We put on a presentation with models lounging in a garden set in a white photography studio.
I vividly remember the large roller door of the studio lifting to whimsical music and seeing all the wonderful faces that came to see the show.
Wynn Crawshaw - Wynn Hamlyn - www.wynnhamlyn.com - Of the two years I have shown I like them both for different reasons. Year 1 (2015) for being my first year - I was nervous and excited. I liked this year (2016) because I had a bigger show (25 looks) and could do more and say more. This year probably has happier memories as I was less stressed as a result of having done it before and knowing what to expect.
Jessica Grubisa - Harman Grubisa - www.harmangrubisa.com - Thats a tough one! Opening the week as Mercedes - Benz Presents designers this year was a dream come true, a very surreal moment for us both. Our first FW show ‘’Dakota’’ Will always hold pride of place in my heart however- specifically Liv O’driscoll closing the show in the Radner coat.
More tomorrow, see you back here soon!
